Fort Jefferson Model

In 2011, Historic Tours of America came to me with the proposal to build a model of Historic Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas. We worked with the National Parks Service and YANKEE FREEDOM, the ferry to the Fort, to collect information like original plans and historic photos of the construction of the fort and changes over the years.
We decided to use HO scale because we found marching Union soldiers, 7/8 inches high. This made the fort over 14 feet across. It took over two years to complete the model, and it's now open to the public as a free attraction in the old Thompson Fish House in the Historic Key West Seaport.
Alan Kennish and Norman Aberle have assembled a collection of historic photos of the Key West Bight, many that have never been seen by the public before, that tell the story of the bight against a background of sky and water that wraps around the fort model.
